Philip Sheldrake argues that the importance of spirituality has grown in contemporary Western culture concurrently with a decline in the importance of religion. (A Brief History of Spirituality, Blackwell 2007) Why do you think spirituality is so important when religion and church membership have declined in their importance? Obviously one can lead a devotional life apart from organized religion but the church used to be the place where one's spirit was raised up and nurtured.
In my personal opinion some people are turned off by religion and labels. To b a spiritual person is much more than showing up for church on sundays. Its in our nature to belief in a higher power or to want to. I was a very curious child and always questioned diff beliefs and religions bc there are so many. After 20 yrs of this I still only have one conclusion, God has many faces and names but is the one constant.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to The Soul's Journey. You have been on your journey for a while now, and it sounds like you have given this question prayerful thought. So, can you say more about what you think makes for a spiritual life? Is worship a part of spiritual life? Should it be?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Leading a spiritual life is much deep than simply going to church on Sunday. And human beings are "hard wired" to seek the Holy. But what awakens that desire and search in us?
I hope you will respond. Blessings and Peace for your journey.
